ESSEX -- Mount Mansfield received touchdowns from four players en route to a 36-6 win over outmanned North Country in high school football Saturday.

The Cougars scored early and often, running to a 29-0 halftime lead before a raucous homecoming crowd. Brothers Mike and Ian Shaw each contributed a score, as did running back Nate Gallagher. Bruising junior tailback Brian Wilcox scored twice, including his team's final points on a 2-yard plunge late in the third quarter.

North Country earned a late score when quarterback Aaron Grondin scampered around left end for a 33-yard touchdown with 2:39 left.

MMU head coach Marty Richards was pleased with his team's efforts, but already had next week's clash with Colchester on his mind.

"Our kids played very well tonight -- they clicked on all cylinders," he said. "But next week is going to be a battle. Colchester is a very good team and we have got to rise to the occasion. We need to show a little bit more consistency on the offensive side and we need to do a better job of getting kids in the right position. We just have a few little adjustments to make and we will be all right."

Falcon coach Bob Davis said his team came out of the locker room flat and it cost them in the first half.

"I think we came out a little unprepared, a little flat," he said. "We had problems with their misdirection plays, and they were able to defend us very well. We just could not run the option like we wanted to and we played the price. Give them credit. They are a very good team and came out ready to play. We didn't."
