WINOOSKI -- Mount Mansfield rushed for over 200 yards in the first half as the Cougars rolled past the Winooski Spartans 35-14 in Division IV football action Friday night.

The Cougars, led by a trio of running backs, shredded the Spartan defense on a series of counter plays that resulted in four first-half touchdowns.

Connor Gallagher, Greg Pinette, and Jack Dubuque accounted for most of MMU's rushing attack, helping the Cougars (2-1 in D-IV, 3-2 overall) stake a 28-0 lead by intermission.

Gallagher, who produced TD runs of 22 and 17 yards in the first half, was happy the Cougars got the victory after last week's tough loss to Colchester.

"After losing last week, we knew we had to win this game," Gallagher said. "We want to have a good seed (for the playoffs), so that was enough motivation to get the win."

The Cougars marched down the field on their possession of the game, going 60 yards in nine plays. MMU quarterback Nathan Dolan completed the drive when the junior faked the handoff and rolled outside to the left for the easy 6-yard score. The 2-point conversion gave MMU an 8-0 lead with 7:53 left in the opening period.

MMU's next two scores came from Gallagher. Both of the junior's touchdowns were on similar inside handoffs that confused the Winooski defense, allowing Gallagher to walk into the end zone.

"We are a double wing offense, so everything we do is based on ball fakes," MMU coach Marty Richards said.

With the score at 21-0, Pinette tallied the final score before halftime on a 2-yard gain after a short drive.

In the second half, Winooski, behind quarterback DJ Campbell, staged a small rally. Campbell's arm and feet helped engineer two scoring drives. The junior quarterback scored on a sneak early in the fourth quarter. On Winooski's next possession, Campbell fired a 24-yard TD strike to Patrick Thomas to cut the lead in half with 4:47 left. However, MMU sealed the game on Jesse Garrett's 15-yard TD scamper.

Winooski head coach Paul Frenette said his team prepared for MMU's unique running attack, but did not make the plays.

"Once you start peeking in their backfield, you are going to get lost in a hurry and that was evident on their touchdowns," Winooski coach Paul Frenette said. "We played better in the second half and made some plays."

Winooski fell to 1-2 in league play and 1-3 overall. Pinette finished with 86 yards leading all rushers. Gallagher ran for 85 yards and Dubuque had 69 yards.
