ESSEX -- Mount Mansfield senior running back Greg Pinette made the Cougars' first home game at Essex High School one to remember.

With MMU down 14-0 at halftime, Pinette scored 14 of MMU's 28 unanswered second-half points to lead the Cougars past Montpelier, 28-14.

"This is a huge gut check. This is one of our sweetest wins," said MMU head coach Marty Richards, who started the program five years ago. "You go down 14-0 at halftime, you got no choice. You can roll over and play dead or you could come out and play some football."

And play is exactly what Pinette did. He ran for 104 yards in the third quarter, highlighting MMU (2-1) scoring drives of 60 and 65 yards. On the game, he carried 30 times for 246 yards.

"In the second half, the line stepped it up," said Pinette, who wasn't surprised by the comeback. "We knew we could do it. The line knew they could do it. We did it."

Pinette was almost the game's goat. He ran the ball for 55 yards in the beginning of the second quarter, only to fumble and have it recovered by Montpelier (1-1). On the next play, Solons senior running back Eli Sherman ran for a 90-yard touchdown to give Montpelier (1-1) a 14-0 lead.

Sherman also scored the game's first touchdown: a 45-yard run.

"We're disappointed, leading at halftime and thinking we're going to have a win," said Montpelier head coach Doug Belisle. "MMU stuck to their game plan. That offense kept the clock going and wore the defense down."
